CBD is short for cannabidiol, a compound found in the hemp plant. It works naturally with the body’s endocannabinoid system to regulate mood and pain without causing any sensation of a “high”.
CBD 101
CBD is short for “cannabidiol.” It’s a non-psychoactive compound produced by the hemp plant. The cannabis hemp plant has over 100 different types of these compounds, called cannabinoids, with cannabidiol being one of the most prevalent.
Each cannabinoid possesses its own unique skill set and effects for the consumer. CBD is well known for its calming abilities and overall wellness benefits. It’s because of these positive effects that many people are turning to CBD for the first time.
CBD and THC have the same molecular structure, with 21 carbon atoms, 30 hydrogen atoms, and 2 oxygen atoms. The only difference is how the atoms are arranged, which causes the different side effects that the two cannabinoids offer.
Despite being almost the same on a molecular level, CBD and THC have very different psychoactive effects. CBD has no psychoactive effects, while THC does.
Most people describe the feeling of taking CBD as calming, both for the body and the mind. CBD settles your thoughts and allows you to focus, but also gently relaxes your body.

1. Cultivating the hemp plant
When hemp plants reach maturation, they are culled for their oil. There are two different areas from which hemp oil is extracted. The first is hemp seed oil. As the name implies, this oil is derived from the seeds of the hemp plant. Hemp seed oil has its own beneficial properties.
The moisturizing properties of hemp seed oil make it great for skin care products. Hemp seed oil, however, should not be confused with hemp oil (or CBD oil).

When CBD is extracted from the hemp plant, there are different processes used that result in different types of CBD oil. At Mother we use two types; Full-Spectrum (or whole-plant) & isolate CBD oil.

Full-Spectrum CBD
Traces of THC (< 0.3%)
Full spectrum CBD is derived from hemp and contains many cannabinoids beyond CBD, along with other elements of the hemp plant, including naturally-occurring terpenes, essential vitamins, fatty acids, protein, and a minimal amount of < 0.3% THC. You might sometimes find full spectrum CBD called whole-plant CBD extract for this reason.

Isolate CBD
Traces of THC (0%) - no amount of THC
CBD isolate is a form of CBD, or cannabidiol, which is a chemical compound present in the cannabis plant. Unlike full-spectrum CBD products, CBD isolate does not contain any THC — the psychoactive component of cannabis. It can therefore be safely taken by pets as well as young adults.
Frequently asked questions
The amount of CBD you should take depends on a number of factors, including body weight, the condition you are treating, your own body chemistry and the concentration of CBD you are using.
We advise that you start with a smaller dosage and gradually increase it. This may mean beginning with 20 to 40 mg a day. After a week, increase this amount by 5 mg and continue to do this until you feel that it’s effectively treating your symptoms.
There are three main types of cannabidiol (CBD). CBD isolate is the pure form of CBD, while full-spectrum CBD is an extract containing other compounds of the cannabis plant, such as terpenes and other cannabinoids. The third type is broad-spectrum CBD.
Mother provides three different potencies of CBD oil for you to choose from; 900mg, 1800mg and 3000mg. These are considered low, medium and high doses, respectively.
Different strengths of CBD oil will have different effects. Typically, weaker potencies are ideal for day to day health whilst stronger doses are often better for more serious medical conditions.
CBD requires careful consideration when used alongside other medication.
CBD can affect the way other drugs work, and impact their ability to do their jobs. This is why its always worth speaking with your doctor before considering the use of CBD, especially if you already take medication.
CBD will not get you high in any quantity or dose because it is not psychotropic. Psychotropic simply means a psychoactive effect that has intoxicating qualities. THC, which is another compound found in cannabis, is the compound responsible for the psychotropic effects associated with hemp and cannabis, and you won’t find it above 0.3% in Mother CBD products.
